Academies come together for 2018 OAT Sports Cup

OAT Sports Cup 2018

Seven academies joined together on Thursday 5 July at the Northwood Stadium, to compete in the prestigious OAT Sports Cup 2018.

Over 700 students and staff took part in the annual sporting event, where academies and students competed against one another for cups, trophies and medals across a whole variety of events, including athletics, dancing, team sports such as dodgeball, tag rugby and five-a-side football and most importantly, the tug of war.

The event was sponsored by Zurich Municipal and the Trust itself. The day was organised by the central OAT Enrichment team and led by Paul Morris from Ormiston SWB Academy in Wolverhampton and his team.

Student sports leaders from each academy involved, also supported all the games to make sure that the day ran smoothly and captaining teams. This was a fantastic opportunity for these young people to develop their leadership skills.

Ormiston Horizon Academy claimed victory as the Overall Winners of the day and winners of the cup for Overall Athletics, whilst Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy won the cup for Overall Games and George Salter Academy, took the cup for Dance for their fantastic performance.

The OAT Sports Cup, now in its third year, has become an annual highlight for the Trust and an important opportunity to celebrate the sporting talents of the fantastic young people across our network and to bring students together to challenge themselves and have fun.

The annual OAT Sports Cup, is one of a number of Trust wide sporting and cultural events and initiatives that OAT academies can take part in. Such events are part of the Trust’s commitment to providing students across its network with a range of enrichment activities, designed to broaden their horizons and raise their aspirations, through its Enrichment Charter.

The academies involved in this year’s event were Ormiston Chadwick Academy, Ormiston Horizon Academy, Ormiston Sir Stanley Matthews Academy, George Salter Academy, Ormiston SWB Academy, Ormiston NEW Academy and Ormiston Shelfield Community Academy.

Jemima Waltho, Enrichment Manager at Ormiston Academies Trust said:

“The OAT Sports Cup has become a fantastic annual event and a real highlight in the school calendar that I know staff and students across the Trust really look forward to. This year’s event was a real triumph and you could really see how much all the staff and students got out of the competition and the opportunity to test themselves and compete against their peers.

“We are delighted that Zurich Municipal and OAT were able to provide sponsorship this year and we would also like to extend special thanks to the team at Ormiston SWB Academy for all their hard work that made it possible. We are now looking forward to next year’s event!”

Paul Morris, Ormiston SWB Academy said:

“I would like to thank all the staff and students who took part and everyone at OAT for their support in making this year’s OAT Sports Cup such a fantastic and rewarding event. It was brilliant to see students and staff from so many different academies coming together to get to know one another, enjoy themselves and take part in such a wide range of sports and activities. I was also extremely impressed with our student sports leaders from across the Trust, who played a pivotal role in making the day such a success.”

Rob Nash, Account Manager, Zurich Municipal, the key sponsor for the event commented:

“At Zurich, we believe that supporting sporting events like this and Ormiston’s work to bring young people from around the country together to compete and have fun, is a fantastic way of giving back to the community. “I would like to congratulate the winners and all the young people who took part for their passion and enthusiasm. It is great to hear that everyone had such a fantastic time with so many individual and academy successes.”
